- After the Abdication of the Tsar, a provisional government was created and lead by Prince George Lvov - they made no real attempt at to seek an armistice - He was unwilling to take Russia out of the war - was unpopular amongst the people of russia - resigned in July 1917 - replaced by Alexander Kerensky - was favoured because of his past experiences in politics - Just like Lvov, Kerensky was unwilling to end the war - Soldiers in the war were unhappy with this decision - they refused to move to the front line - as many as 2 million soldier dropped out of the army unofficially - Soldier returned home and used their weapons to seize land from the nobility - houses were burnt to the ground, and many rich land owner were killed - Kerensky did everything he could to stop it, but was ultimately powerless to stop the redistribution of land - Kerensky called on the Soviets and the Red Guards to help protect Petrograd - The Bolsheviks enlisted 25,000 armed recruits to help
